Towing Issues: 2001 Nissan Frontier, nissan frontier, tow dolly

Question
Hello, my 2001 nissan frontier {auto,3.3 v-6} recently broke down 200 miles from my hometown of Memphis,TN. It was literally in the middle of nowhere, plus we were unfamiliar with the area and had no idea what was the matter with the vehicle. At the time it made perfect sense to rent a tow dolly from a nearby uhaul location, logic being get it home so we could find and fix. My husband loaded trucks front wheels on dolly, put in neutral and bought it home. Now that the mechanical repairs have been made, we are facing another major problem, the truck will not go into reverse, neutral was working but now is not, all positions of shifter {except park)appear to be drive????any suggestions? fluid level appears fine and was changed about a year ago.

Answer
It sounds like your attempt to save some money and do it yourself with the tow dolly, managed to overheat the transmission fluid, burn up bearings and gears inside the transmission and now you have to replace or repair the transmission.

I know that the owners manual says that you can do some of this kind of towing, but that is a general statement thing.

Check out the link below and it will show you what we do with "COMMERCIAL - RETAIL" towing methods with out tow trucks.  It shows the limits for towing vehicles and since you say it had an Automatic transmission you can see that front wheels up on the dolly the rear wheels down, the towing limit is NO - NO on that vehicle.

Just run down the vehicle list till you get to your vehicle type and you will find the specific information on your vehicle and issue.

Sorry for the bad news.
