Question
I had my car impounded for 30 days for driving on an expired driver licence. the car is being held in a towing companys yard and i have to pay a $250 towing fee plus $75 for each day my car is in the towing yard. the total cost to get the car released is $2500. when i pay this fee at the towing yard who pockets the impound fee??? the police or the towing company???

Answer
Well, I am not sure where you are, but the rates sound like it is in California...

The towing fee of course goes to the tow company for the "PHYSICAL PART OF THE TOWING" and as to the storage fee, well I really have no idea of who would get it all... There might be a division of the moneys, but the tow company is the one taking the risk (insurance coverage for loss, theft, damage) and all that.  They are providing the space for the vehicle to sit on, so there are property taxes, mortgage payments and such.

I would assume that it is the tow companies money also, but do not quote me on all that, as I do not really know.

I do know that the 30 day holds are legal and have been challenged in many states by motorists and there are only a few exceptions to the vehicle being there for the full 30 days.

If you are in California (which I am guessing) you can check out the DMV web site and look at the laws there regarding the laws on this subject...

You might have to dig a bit to get to the sections in question but you might have the actual numbers of the vehicle code if you are there...
