Towing Issues: HORSE TRAILER TOWING VEHICLE, toyota 4runner, trailer sway

Question
I HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT A 2007 V-8, 4.7L TOYOTA 4RUNNER W/ 2WD. IT HAS A FACTORY INSTALLED TOW PACKAGE THAT IS SAID TO TOW 7000 LBS. I HAVE A 2 HORSE TRAILER THAT WHEN FULLY LOADED W/ HORSES AND TACK WEIGH ABOUT 4800 LBS. CAN I USE THE 4RUNNER AS AN OCCASSIONAL (ABOUT ONCE A MONTH) TOWING VEHICLE FOR THE HORSE TRAILER SAFELY? I LIVE IN FLORIDA (NOT TOO MANY HILLS) AND THE TRAILER IS BRAKED.

Answer
The answer is yes and no. This question is also determined by the driver's ability and experience. Some people can't tow 5X8 trailer behind a dually. I'll assume you are experienced in trailing, proper loading and some factors involved with towing. The 4runner will be within the ratings by the manufacture but you will definitely know the trailer is back there. Trailer sway and SPEED are the main causes of towing accidents. As you know horses don't stand exactly still the whole time and shift the weight around in the trailer. This will cause slight movement and sway that will be transferred to the 4runner. Many 4runners come equipped with oversized all terrain tires that allow flexing for offroading. Flexing in the sidewall of the tire can create sway. A few options that can be done are adding springs or bags, changing the tires and installing a weight distributing hitch with sway controls. Another factor that will reduce sway is driving under the posted speed limit. The 4runners with the 4.7 V-8's have plenty of power, great working transmission and decent brakes for towing. In my opinion, off the dealer lot the 4runner will need some changes to be a better tow vehicle for you.
