Towing Issues: Towing a 99 Jeep Wrangler with Auto Trans, jeep wrangler sahara, sahara 4x4

Question
I want to tow my 99 Jeep Wrangler SAHARA 4X4 with an auto transmission.  Can I just put the trans in neutral and the transfer case and neutral and go ?  IF not what is the correct procedure if you can even do so with an automatic ?
Thanks

Answer
I suggest referring to your owner's manual first and follow the manufactures recommendations. Generally, most 4wd/awd drive vehicles are unsafe to flat tow or dolly tow without some sort of damage or accelerated wear and tear. Most Jeeps like your's are known with flat towing without damage with the transfer case in neutral, transmission in park, ignition key on first click. The reasoning for the transmission in park (or first gear with a manual transmission)is because at high speeds the rotating gears in the neutral shifted transfer case can still deliver or able to turn the transmission gears in neutral with parasitic drag. They may not be turning as fast as the gears in the transfer case but they may still rotate in the transmission which is bad. The steering column must be unlocked when flat towing which goes without saying. If not you will know why on the first turn. My suggestion (if it were mine) is disconnecting both driveshafts at the axles and strap them up to the frame, takes about 5 minutes, 10 minutes tops! This procedure is the only correct way of knowing that no possible transmission or transfer case damage will occur. When flat towing there is still normal wear and tear on the axles, bearings, fluids, tires, etc. which still have to be serviced as through the Jeep was driven. If the driveshaft disconnects are too bothersome then I would recommend a car trailer. I also suggest http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/index.php for more research. Tons of jeep information on that website.
