Towing Issues: towing req for a 89 jeep cherokee, 4x4 cherokee, jeep cherokee

Question
I will be towing a 65 mustang aprox 500 miles and will be returning with a 89 4x4 Cherokee.  Both vehicles will be towed using a dolly.  Should I tow either one backwards or frontwards and disconnect drive shafts.  Should I even tie the steering wheel.  I cant find a real answer on the subject.  The mustang will have the engine and trany in the trunk.

Answer
Charles,

The mustang should be able to be towed with the front wheels on the dolly. The reason you have to remove the drive line is so that you don't damage an auto trans. If the cherokee is a stick the you just put it in neutral. If it is an auto, then disconnect the drive line at the rear and tie it up to the frame. The reason I would do that instead of putting it on backwards is because it is much easier to tow with the engine weight on the dolly. If you do decide to tow it backwards the you should most definitely tie off the steering wheel.
