Towing Issues: Fathers truck towed due to police incompetence, police incompetence, police supervisor

Question
My father recently got historic tags for his truck. Today a police office had the car towed because he said he called the MVA/DMV and the cars registration did not appear in the records. Later on when we found out where the car was towed a brought proof of registration for the officer and the towing company. The officer admitted his mistake and said we needed to talk to the towing company to have it released. after talking to the man who "owned" the towing service, he still refused to release the truck to us. is there anything we can do to require it to be released. I understand the towing company was just doing its job, but isn't it take liability for the mistakes the police make by placing itself on their call list or something?

Answer
If the tow company did not screw up then why should they NOT be paid for services rendered. As for the tow company not releasing the vehicle, it will not be released until the services are paid, call list or not. The tow company will not release a vehicle if it is improperly registered, title jumped, non owner, etc. Insurance, inspection, current registration, equipment, decals, license, etc. all come into effect. If the police are truly responsible for improperly towing the vehicle then the police should be responsible for paying the towing company for services rendered. I suggest double checking that your dad was truly wronged by the police before going forward. Contact a police supervisor, sergeant or captain about the situation. The police do pay for tows when they screw up, it's rare but does happen. Hope this helps but don't fault the tow company.
