Answer
That is a hard case because you have to prove that the contents inside the vehicle is yours. The vehicle not being registered or titled in your name only hurts and complicates your position. By you saying that is my stuff doesn't prove it. The reason why the tow company, impound yard or arresting officer just don't let you have the contents is liability and litigation. It's not because we want to give you a hard time and want your stuff! There position would be if we had to explain to a judge, in court of law, we would have to prove to the judge that the items in that vehicle were yours. How could we do this? Just by your word! Even if you have receipts, serial numbers, credit card statements and 8x10 pictures of you with the property it would still be a fight because it would require a lawyer, money and a court date. I wish I had the answer you were looking for but you took a gamble and lost.

One solution could be when the vehicle comes up for auction, either buy the vehicle back with the contents or ask about the disposal of contents when the vehicle goes up for auction. The tow company is no longer legally liable for the contents once the vehicle sells at auction. Talk to the tow owner or manager and be professional, intelligent and respectful when making your presentation. Let them know you are interested in the vehicle and or contents. I'm not saying they will do this, I'm trying to find an option. Best regards and hope everything works out.
