Towing Issues: storage charges, public utilities commission, hook ups

Question
Hi, my car was towed yesterday, police hook-up.  In my state I know that hook-ups are 88 with 2 free miles and storage is 24/28.  My bill was 160.75.

Breakdown 88
1 mile    4.75
2 days    48

here is my problem, the car was .5 miles from the tow yard and I got the car out of the yard before 24 hours were up.  What can I do about the additional 28.75 I think I was overcharged?  (Less the milage and 1 day storage)

Answer
Wow those rates are really low and really behind the times...

Sounds like something from Massachusetts or up in New England area...

Now if the rates are set via the state for tows from private parking lots then those rates are what would apply, but if it was a police ordered tow then those rates would not apply.. Its kind of confusing as towing rates are set for either "non consent towing or consent towing"

Non consent is basically tows done from Private Parking lots for illegal parking and they are generally authorized via the property owner...

But tows ordered - authorized by the police department for things such as overtime parking, DUI, accidents are sometimes under contract for that agency which at times are either lower or higher than the state rates which might be set by the State Public Utilities Commission or other regulatory agency...

Yes that is very confusing at times and even tow companies get it wrong at times...

Now as to the "difference" which you believe  you were overcharges, I can only suggest  you contact who ever is regulating the rates charged and see what they can do or suggest, but not sure who to contact as I do not know what state you are in...

As a side note those rates are about 1/2 of what we change here for police ordered tows here in Dothan Alabama where I am...
