Towing Issues: impound lot/ towing problems, nassau county new york, company attitude

Question
Hello I live in Nassau County, New York and had my car towed for a DUI. I obviously had no choice on who to get it towed by and the police have their own company they always use. It took me a very long time to get all the paperwork needed to get it out, because i had no title/ registration.  My complaint is about the excessive fees which totaled over $1000 for sitting their about 3 months and when I went there today it had a flat tire and a dead battery...they told me it wasn't their fault and won't do anything about it. Is this right?  Are the fees about the same everywhere or are these way over, and are they really not responsible for a flat tire while it was sitting in THEIR impound lot which was filled with broken glass and looked like a terrible place for any car?...thank you

Answer
Well each and every day the vehicle sits in the tow yard it incurs a "daily ground rental fee" which is also called storage..

Now in most places it is $20.00 or more a day and if it sat there for 3 months  (90 days x 20.00 =$1820.00 in storage alone)
Tow fees vary by city, county or state and are sometimes regulated by contracts with the police departments or even by the state... So I can not tell you if you were charged the correct rates...

Now as to the dead battery and the flat tire.. Do you think that if it sat at your house for 3 months without being started or moved that it would crank right up and have air in the tires ???  That happens during long storage and its very common...
As to then not helping, well I have no idea, how hard is it to do a jump start or either change a tire or put air in it.. That part I have no idea.

Impound lots also as you say do not always look good but remember what they do for a business. I know our yards here have some glass and such but we try to keep them somewhat clean... It all depends on the company attitude I guess.
