Towing Issues: impounded trailer laws and rights, private property owner, google search

Question
I have an inclosed utility trailer that I had just finished building; not yet inspected or registered; when it was towed.  When I went down to the impound lot they informed me that all I needed was the bill of sale to show proof that the trailer was mine. Well, when I went back down to the lot with the bill of sale, the story had changed.  They informed me that I needed to have the registration and title.  Even though I had tried several times to explain that I had not gotten it inspected and registered yet.  I tried telling them that I could not get it registered without getiing it inspected, but they would not listen.  I just would really like to have the contents of the trailer; if they want to keep the trailer thats fine with me.  On 11-13-07 they are planning on filing for abandoned title and trying to claim it as their own.  I just found out that they have their own inspectors right there on the lot.  I really need help getting my property back.

Answer
well without knowing what state this is happening in, I will be a big loss to provide much more than a generic answer here.

First of all contact the State DMV and see what they suggest on this issue of registration and such. Next who had the vehicle impounded, local police, or a private property owner.   That also does matter as it will provide you with more avenues of action...  Check with the local police department of the area and see if they can provide you with some information.
The fact it was never registered might still be a good thing for you, but it can also hurt as it does not allow for the establishment of ownership. The bill of sale might be worth something, but you will have to keep working on establishing ownership...

There are various laws in each state regarding how the "lien process" works and like I said earlier without knowing what state you are in I can not provide more information...

Do a google search for towing laws in your state and do some reading on them. It will help a bit. Also if there is another tow company in the area you can try to ask them some questions on how to resolve this issue. They might help you.

Hope this basic information helps you. Sorry again that I could not provide specific information.
