Towing Issues: NYC Towing, urban myth, illegal parking

Question
I came out to find my car about to be towed. Nothing was hooked up and the
tow truck was from the NYPD. The officer told me to step back and I told him
since I was there I would move it. He said it was too late and told me to step
back and then hooked it up and drove it away. After I told some people I was
told that if the car was not hooked up that it was illegal for him to take it and
I should have just got in and drove away. Is this correct? Please help to clarify
this urban myth.

Answer
Well let me say this, bear with me on it...

As you stated he was from the NYPD and doing his job in removing an illegally parked vehicle... You wanted to "interfere" with the officer in performance of his duty..

You wanted to just take it and drive off (I know you do not really want to go to the piers and pay the fees and tickets)

What really is happening is that you have failed to realize that driving is a right and as such you have to follow the rules as such... One of them is "obey the directions of law enforcement officers"

I wonder what would of happened if you tried to take it.. How much jail time ? How huge of court and legal fees?

Vehicles are towed for illegal parking and also some of them are also towed because of unpaid parking tickets... How many do you have if any ?

Urban myth ? well I do not think that it really is one. I think it's more than a few people giving you really bad advise.

Sorry for not really having the answers here, but its one of those questions that really has no REAL ANSWERS beyond how far you really want to push the issue and of such face the outcome.
