Towing Issues: wrongful towing/adandon car?, auto part store, certified mail

Question
hi, i was hoping you could help. i live in springfield, ma and about a year ago my now ex boyfriend stole my car and crashed it he had it towed by and auto shop that does business w/ his boss (that tow and everything was paid under the business name and my then boyfriend was paying weekly out of his pay check back to the company)

anywho, the car ended up being to expensive to fix so we decided to junk it, (his father works at a junk yard, so he was to pick it up and bring it there for no fee) i was told this happened, everything has been taken care of

so over this weekned i get a letter from a completly different towing company stating they sold my car to another company seeing how i have adandon the car at the auto part store and it has been at the tow company since 5/13/07 and now i owe them $996.50

i am completly taken back by this, i have called several tow companys to confirm that this is legal and they say no that both the auto place and tow company were suppose to contact me (by certified mail) to see if what i intended to do with the car and the auto place was not allowed to have it towed until then and then the tow place was not allowed to sell it until contacting me.

can anyone please help and let me know this if this is true, and if anyone knows of the  tow laws / vehicle abandoment laws in ma.

thank you so much

Answer
Well this question has a few things I can try to answer but it sounds like you have got the correct information from the other towers you called..

First of all, the state regulates towing and the disposal of vehicles by tow companies.. Check with them and see what they tell you... I am not sure of the name but I think its like a regulatory agency who does the power companies an such also..

Second it does sound like a few laws were broke and there will be some legal actions that can be taken...
Best answer here now is "LAWYER UP"  After all the letter is a legal notice type and you can counter it...

Talk to some lawyers and see what they say, I bet you will get good advise there...
