Towing Issues: I had gotten into an accident and I was wondering about some things?, tow truck driver, gps mobile

Question
Well I had gotten into an accident and this local towing company towed my car away. i couldn't get anything out of my car because it was a pretty bad accident and the air bags didn't deploy. Well the Police officers wouldn't let me in, so everything I had was left in there and towed away. My mom went to the towing company to get my stuff out about two days later and I had told her specifically what she needed to look for. Turns out my $100 dollar radar detector was gone, my GPS mobile navigation was missing, and about $50.00 was missing from my car. I had my mom call them and they said their was nothing they could do about it. What could I do? I'm so pissed.

Answer
Sorry to hear about the accident and I hope everyone involved is ok...
Air bags, well not going into that, but yeah even after accidents they can go off it they did not during the accident
Well, now generally tow companies will only release property to the owner or agent designated in writing unless other arrangements are made.  This also allows for the proper people to get what is in the vehicle..

Sorry to hear you have had things stolen from the vehicle, and now I have to ask if you know if the police did a report on the vehicle condition and contents... I know in some states (and Cities) they have forms which list what is in the vehicle and the tow truck driver has to sign it before towing  it...  Its a property inventory type deal, but its not always used.

Now to defend the tow company (notice I do this as I am a tow truck driver also) when its towed to the yard, which is usually fenced or inside a building, they do everything they can to protect and secure the vehicle from the weather and the criminal element... But even the tallest fences and stuff will not stop a thief from getting what they want..

I would suggest that you at least file a police report on the stolen items and also advise your insurance company about the loss..  You may not have coverage for this, but they do deserve to know...

I would also contact the tow company yourself, having someone else do it does not work good.. To much they say you say issues..

Police reports,  talking to the tow company, and if things do not get solved then you always have documentation and as such you have the small claims court route.
