Towing Issues: tow dolly, electric brake controller, surge brakes

Question
I am considering buying a tow dolly for my 2007 wINNEBAGO VIEW. I want to tow my toyota corolla behind.

Do I need to buy a tow dolly with brakes or not. I am getting answers both ways. I am confused

Answer
I would say you should get the brakes, electric or surge.  The electric are adjustable from inside the tow vehicle, the surge brakes are not.

Why?  Because you are adding about 2800 pounds (2006 Corolla spec is about 2650, but with a full tank and other things, you might get close to 2800 or more) to the total weight of your vehicle.  to stop that, it would be nice to have an extra set of wheels adding to the stopping power.

the first time you run out of brakes going down a mountain, you will wish you had spent a couple hundred extra bucks (or something like that) on the trailer brakes and a quality controler!

here is a site where you can do some research, I don't know anything about their products or quality.

I would recommend the extra taillight kit, a winch to put the car on the dolly if it won't run (and it is safer even if the car runs!) and get the electric breakaway switch, it is required in most states anyway.  Don't scrimp on the chains and straps.  Get good ones and replace them if they get worn.

Make sure your hitch ball mount has plenty of capacity.

If you are buying this stuff new, it is so cheap to get the capacity and quality you deserve (and it helps keep others on the highway safe too) for just a few extra bucks.  The peace of mind and safety is well worth it.

Oh, and keep the instructions for the electric brake controller and make sure all drivers get comfortable with the adjustments and controls!  Make sure all drivers get used to applying the trailer brakes at the controller in case they need to in an emergency some day.
