Towing Issues: Tow Connect Points, towing rope, tow rope

Question
Salt Lake City, UT.  I recently helped a lady whose car was dead.  Her relative came with a tow rope, neither one of them knew anything about cars, so I helped them attach the tow rope.  The car was a late 90's Pontiac Grand Am.  Normally I would attach the rope to the crossmember or somewhere on the frame, but there was a shroud up to the crossmember, the car was very low and there weren't many options, so I connected the tow rope to the lower control arm, near the bushing.  It didn't occur to me until afterwards that this may have damaged her car.  Was that a big mistake or is that sometimes acceptable?

Answer
Connecting any towing rope, strap or other system to SUSPENSION PARTS is usually a bad idea... Some of them are made out of parts which are not as strong as the frame..

Also using a tow rope leads to other problems such as transmission problems, along with the usual people not knowing how to really tow vehicles or drive vehicles being towed..

Hopefully this is not going to have caused problems...
