Towing Issues: Trailering Question, electric brake controller, sierra 4x4

Question
Hello Don,
Would you be kind enough to recommend what i need to tow a trailer in the 5-6k lb range?
I have a 2004 GMC Sierra,4x4,auto,4.8 L V-8,long bed, standard cab. No trailering package.  I think the owners manual says something in the 8-9k lb. range
Thanks,
Dick

Answer
Sounds like you have a rig that can handle what you plan.  Just make sure the trailer you are going to haul actually does weigh what you think.  Figure in anything extra you might put in the trailer or in the truck.  don't go over total rig weight, or the gross Combined vehicle weight rating.

As for your truck, if you don't have the trailer package, then you might want to add a transmission cooler.  That is probably the most important bit of the package for most vehicles.

Also get a good electric brake controller and make sure the trailer brakes are in good shape.
I like a load equalizing hitch, takes some of the weight off the back axle and puts it on the front axle.  Also helps stabilize the trailer.
