Towing Issues: Towing and Storage Issue, storage fees, owner ship

Question
I sold my 1989 Ford Ranger to a gentleman a couple months ago.  Just this week I received a notice in the mail from a tow and storage company stating that I owed them $553 for storage.  I informed them that I sold that truck to someone else.  They told me that since he didn't re-register the truck that I am responsible for the fees.  I don't feel that this is so since I no long had owner ship of the truck.  They told me to contact the guy I sold it to and get the money from him.  I didn't sell it to a friend of mine, so contacting him is impossible.  Am I responsible for the fees?

Answer
While you may feel that you are being chased for the money owed for towing and storage fees, on a vehicle you sold there are several issues which you have to deal with.

I am sorry that the person who bought the vehicle from you did not register it, (it is a very common problem) there were things you could of done to help release your self of the liability..

Did you sign off the title and have them sign onto the title.  Did you make copies of this form and send or hand deliver it to your state DMV office...
This is what usually needs to be done to release you from being responsible...

I would spend some time and go visit the DMV office and see what you will need to do.

I know the tow company wants to get paid for services it provided to the vehicle... They follow the DMV laws as to who is the owner of the vehicle... That is what happened to you, as you are still listed as owner...

One word to the wise, I would be working on solving this issue in any way you can, as in some states your drivers license or vehicle licenses will be suspended for non payment of towing fees...

Hope this gives you some ideas of what to do.
