Towing Issues: towing an 06 wrangler x jeep w/automatic trns., trns, immobilizer

Question
We are having a problem towing our 06 jeep- when we follow the directions in our manual it is very confusing. When we start to tow, the steering and wheels lock up.Our service dept says to keep the key in ignition?? It's a jeep with a rag top so anybody could steal it.Tell that to the insurance company.Has anybody else had this problem?

Answer
Chip,

There is a simple answer.  The key must be in the ignition.  I know that's not what you wanted to hear but there is no way around it.

Your best options are:
-If the truck has a 'chipped' key have a copy made at a corner store.  This replacement key will turn the ignition and unlock the steering but will not start the truck (or will start it but the truck will shut off after a couple hundred yards).
-If you do not have a chipped key, have an immobilizer installed that requires you to insert a chip or resistor to start the truck.  When you need to tow just use the truck key and don't leave the chip or resistor on the key ring.

Good luck,
