Towing Issues: towing with a dolly, cherokee 4x4, tow dollies

Question
I need to tow an '86 Dodge Lancer (2800lbs) from Tucson AZ. to Sacramento CA. with a '96 Jeep Cherokee 4X4, 4.0 Inline 6.  Is this feasible?  If so what do I need?  Is a dolly speed limited? Thank you.

Answer
Tim,

As usual I do not endorse towing a car with another car or sport utility.

The Lancer weighs 2,800#, the dolly weighs 650-1,500#.  You are looking at 3,450#-4300#.  Since you are over 3,000# most states will require brakes on the tow dolly.

The Cherokee only weighs about 2,900# dry.

Check though my past answers for some of the reasons I don't recommend this type of combination.

Basically the concept of tow dollies is to tow a small light vehicle behind a large heavy one.  It's not as bad as trying to use a tow bar but the dolly will still be pushing the back of the Cherokee around the road.

A dolly is only speed limited if the rental company specifies one or if there is a trailer speed limit on the road.  There is no speed limit inherent with a tow dolly.

Good luck,
