Towing Issues: jeep wrangler towing, jeep wrangler, dinghys

Question
I recently purchased a 2005 Jeep Wrangler automatic to tow behind my motorhome. I understand that the transfer case needs to be in neut. and trans. in park but i noticed that the front wheels do not lock in position when in park. Do they need to be locked while towing?

Answer
Bill,

I assume you are talking about steering and not rotation.  If the wheel didn't rotate, the tire probably wouldn't last very long.

The steering should be unlocked and able to turn freely.  This will allow the tow bar to pull on the car when you make a turn and the front wheels will track with the turn.  This is one reason that some vehicles are better dinghys than others.  Some will have trouble tracking due to the amount of caster or steer-ahead in the suspension design.

Good luck,
