Towing Issues: impound fees for a police impound, department of motor vehicles, phone conversations

Question
Hello, my car was impounded by the police on 6-06-06 (bad day to be oout I guess) and I was arrested for a suspended drivers license, which I found out while I was being arrested it was suspended. Anyhow, when I got released from jail I callled the towing company where my car was and inquired where they were located and what I needed to provide to get my car back, they informed me of everything I needed and at the time the cost was $195.00. The address they gave me is 42 miles away from my home and with all the great friends I apparently do not have, I could not get anyone to take me there. Now it is crucial I get my car back before they take ownership. I will never be able to work or buy another car for that matter, not to mention my son starts first grade soon and I need my car for him. I need to back up a bit, when the towing company first towed my car it was at a lot that was maybe 8 miles from where I reside and they failed to tell me this on three seperate phone conversations, I was told after it was taken to the address 42 miles away. I asked why it was moved and the gentlemen replied oh we keep at the lot close to the costumer for their convienience after ten days we move them here. I was so worried about the distance at the moment and was not realizing how this was going to basically cost me a large sum of money and more than likely losing my car in the end. What can I do? Anything? The cost now $1275 and I have $870.00 - they say they will take nothing less. Please give me any and all suggestions you might have. I am hanging by a thin thread now and time is of the essence.

Thank you,

Danielle

Answer
Hi Danielle,
I would first file a formal complaint with your local Department of Motor Vehicles Investigations office, then call the police department that impounded your car & ask them if it is legal for the tow company to move your car so far away and what the law states regarding impounded vehicles. My guess is that once the car is moved and stored, it should not be moved again until it is necessary to sell, etc. Call your state Attorney General and file a complaint, and don't be afraid to contact your local news media (television stations, newspapers). They may be interested in bringing this situation to the public's attention. Good luck!
