Towing Issues: JEEP TOWING, big bend national park, jeep dealership

Question
What is the best way to tow an old CJ-7 jeep behind a pickup (Dodge Ram or Chevy Fullsize).
(Austin to Big Bend National Park)

I've heard rumors that some methods of towing, (towbars etc.) cause wear to steering mechanism in  Jeeps....

Answer
I don't have expertise in flat towing vehicles.  I have seen Jeeps flat towed behind motorhomes before.  Unsure of steering mech. damage.

Here is a concern that I do have knowledge of.  Transmission damage.  If your Jeep is a standard transmission you will have no problems towing it that distance.  However, if it is automatic, and you are going to tow it with the drive wheels on the ground, you must disconnect the drive shaft from the differential.  Do not pull drive shaft completely out of transmission (front end of shaft) as this will cause you to loose all your transmission fluid.  Secure the disconnect end up into the frame area with strong rope or bailing wire.

Another option would be to rent a two wheel tow dolly.  This would prevent any possible steering mechanism damage, but you would still have the same procedures for automatic vs. standard. You might check the owners manual or Jeep dealership for further information on the steering mech.
