Toyota Repair: 87 toyoya 22R engine stopped

while merging onto a freeway, my engine coughed once and then stopped running.  
shortly after getting to shoulder of roadway, engine turns over fine, but will not start. What should be my primary items to check for disfunction?
A roadside check indicated no loose or missing belts or hoses
no liquids dripping
no visible wireing disconnects
Just stopped
the engine had been running for a half hour when this happened

Hello, the first thing to check is if there is spark to the spark plugs?
If that is ok the next step is to check if there is fuel pressure, if this happened suddenly like the key was turned off it is most likely and electrical issue, so check for spark then let me know, it will also help if you have a volt meter or a 12 volt test light.
