Toyota Repair: 2001 corolla

Question
QUESTION: My corolla shutters in reverse at times. More after been sitting for awhile when not being used. Is transmission going out? had it to a garage but they couldn't make car do what we described by shuttering. Have 124,000 miles on car. Forward gears work great. Just shutters in reverse while slightly accelerating when backing up. This is intermitten meaning doesn't do it all the time, but getting there more and more.

ANSWER: Have you checked the fluid level and the condition of the fluid? Maybe changing the fluid or flushing the transmission completely may help, try an additive, I hear the Lucas stuff works pretty well, you can get it at most auto parts stores.

QUESTION: Had tranny flushed- serviced like I said, the mechanic couldn't get it to shutter. So...to me its sign of tranny going out, or is it something else. Also since it is Toyota front wheel drive can tranny be rebuilt or am I looking at maybe a cv joint?

Answer
Thanks for the reply, the shuddering in reverse is usually a sign of the transmission going out soon, sounds like a hydraulic pressure problem. Toyota dealers do not rebuilt or repair transmissions anymore nor do they recommend doing this due to their complexity. In my opinion this is not a CV joint issue or it would be there all the time including forward.
