Toyota Repair: 1991 Toyota Celica Cruise Control Cuts Out

Question
1991 Toyota Celica GT
L4-132 2.2 DOHC Engine.
5 speed manual transmission

Start car get up to cruising speed.
Cruise control will work sometimes.
Sometimes will not.

Sometimes it will work for a few miles then stop.
Sometimes it will work for many miles with no problems then stop.

In both scenarios the cruise control light will flash.
It consistently will flash 5X's and go out.
The light will not turn back on.
Cycling the key off and back on will always enable the light to be turned back on.
Sometimes the cruise will operate again, sometimes not.
Sometimes it will operate for many miles again sometimes not so many.
There is no particular driving pattern noted when this shut down would occur.
Hills, flatland, driving straight, driving on curves, low altitude, high altitude it is not mode specific, it can happen anytime.
Several times I have monitored the flashing light. all consistently flashing 5X's and out.
Never able to reengage the light until key is cycled off and back on.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer
Hello, first check the brake fluid level under the hood, if too low it can cause this problem, next make sure that the brake lights are functioning correctly, a bad brake light switch that has an intermittent problem can also be the cause, it may be worth a try to just replace the switch, it's located under the dash near the brake pedal.
