Toyota Repair: Throttle body, gunk, throttle body

Question
Hi,

The dealer wants to do a induction service on my throttle body to clean it. Apparently they attach the cleaner to the fuel line and run the car just on the cleaner for a short time period.

This sounds great but my main concern is that the dirt and buildup from the throttle body will end up in my engine, mix with the oil and cause other potential problems inside the engine. The gunk/dirt has to go thru the engine before some of it reaches the exhaust and not all the gunk is going to go out of the exhaust. This concerns me.

Based on your experience, what is your view of this cleaning process and do you recommend this type service?

Thanks a lot.

Harry

Answer
The so called induction service doesn't do anything except deplete money in your wallet, this is an upsell the dealers use to create revenue, unless you have a problem with the engine idle speed or stalling of the engine opt out of this.
I have worked at dealers that charged over $100 for this service which consisted of nothing more than adding a can of fuel injector cleaner into the tank, it's a rip off and a waste of your money.  I could write a book about these kinds of things going on.
