Toyota Repair: still need answer, air fuel ratio, carbon deposits

Question
QUESTION: Dear Ted
I still don't understand why it takes my car 2002 RX 300 4-5 times to start sometimes.  Also the print out said "engine running lean" what does that mean?

ANSWER: In the printout did it state a specific diagnostic trouble code number?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: yes it did give some numbers but i don't recall what they were, when i had them you were on vacation.  I think it was P1150 'running lean'.

the lights continue to come on for 2 or 3 days and then go off just when i'm ready to get another print out.

I still don't understand why it sometimes takes 4 or more times to start my car.  then i have to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep it running.  i'm afraid i'm going to get somewhere and not be able to get home.

Answer
The 1150 is an air/fuel ratio sensor code, most likely the sensor needs to be replaced, as for the stalling, in most cases is is due to too much carbon deposits in the throttle body, this can cause hard starting as well, the throttle body should be cleaned on the inside using throttle body cleaner and a brush.
