Toyota Repair: Previa getting no spark, crank sensor, angle sensors

Question
QUESTION: Thanaks for your consideration!

I have a 1991 Previa that is in overall excellent shape. The other day, wife drove it about 5 miles, turned it off, and after 5 minutes, it would not start again. (It did turn over fine). I showed up, and it started fine and drove home fine. Next morning she drove it again for about 5 miles, and hour later no start. I tried it 2 hours later, no start. made no sputtering or attempt to start at all, just turned over as usual, but with no start.

Not having tuned it in ages (70,000plus miles), I changed plugs, wires, rotor and cap -  Still no start. Checked for spark by loosening a spark plg wire at the distributor. Saw no spark.

Talked to a Toyota mechanic who basically said that the coil, distributor, or crank sensor might be the culprit, but that they almost never go bad. Since I have another previa, I swapped copils and tried again. Still no spark.

I guess I could try changing the distributor, but quite the pain. I do not even know where to find or change the crank sensor.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: There is an igniter module under the car right next to the distributor, I have seen these go bad more often the crank angle sensors. Try swapping it with a known good one.

QUESTION: Thank you.

I could not find an igniter module there, but found one under the drivers seat. I replaced it with one I knew worked, and still no spark. Took the old one to my other previa, put it in, and it started fine. What would you suggest my next step would be. So far  I have new wires, rotor, cap, plugs and a different but working igniter.

Thanks again.
Tom

Answer
Hello, I think you will need to check for diagnostic codes using the check connector next to the driver's seat near the door, open the cover and put a jumper wire between the terminals TE1 and E1 and turn the key on, the check light will blink a two digit code, a code 21 would be two blinks then one and so on, let me know if there are any codes there.
