Toyota Repair: toyota 5 speed trans, nylon bushing, shift forks


Question
i have a 1996 tacoma it is a 5 speed it slips out of 1-3-5 gear it dont grind or any thing like that.when you shift to 3rd and fith it is like real easy

Answer
It may be worn shift bushings, remove the shift boot and remove the shifter from the shift tower by pushing down and turning the spring loaded retainer, (do not unbolt the shift tower)there is a round nylon bushing that fits into the tower and a bushing at the end of the shifter, both parts are available from the Toyota dealer, replace them if necessary, other than that it's most likely worn shift forks or shift selector hubs and shift sleeves.
