Toyota Repair: I Need help please 1997 toyota camry le !!!!, intake air temperature sensor, alpha romero

Question
QUESTION: Dear Ted: hi we have a 1997 Toyota camry le automatic 4 cyl 2.2 engine.4 door.aprox 49 to 50,000 mileage a while ago on my way home our car stalled out going down the road, just conked out. This was in the middle of driving. I pulled over and I could not start it again. I called aaa and it would not take a jump and was towed home.
I bought an obdII cen tech scanner. These are the codes that came up. P0113,P0118, P0511, P2770,P0962 AND P1324 Alpha Romero (spelled incorrectly)stating see manufactures service manual. What are these codes stating and what about the P1324 for A.R.?  Upon inspection the Air breather had a huge chipmunks nest underneath the filter. My husband installed a new battery, battery ground clamp.cleaned the positive replaced starter, replaced air filter, installed new spark plugs, new fuel filter, replaced 3" section of fuel line from fuel filter,
possibly too much bend not sure. When first broke down checked fuel pump, could here it humming now it does not hum.Still does not start. Is there a way to jump out fuel pump relay (circuit open relay)? WHAT ARE THE CODES SHOWING THAT IS WRONG? 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO BREAKING DOWN WENT TO STATE INSP. AND PASSED EMISSIONS, If this is any help? What could be causing it not to start and what caused it to just stop running? thank you so very much for all your help and time with this problem. respectfully yours, emily

ANSWER: To get all of these codes and the fact that you mentioned some rodents had built nest in the air filter suggests to me that there is some wiring damage to the engine wire harness most likely caused by rodents chewing on wires.

The definitions for the codes I have located are as follows:
P0113   intake air temperature sensor malfunction
P0118   Engine coolant temp sensor malfunction
P0511   idle control system malfunction
P2770   torque converter lock up clutch solenoid
P0692   cooling fan circuit malfunction

Replacing any parts is not the answer as all of these malfunctioning at the same time is almost impossible, the problem is most likely wiring damage. Inspection of the engine room wiring may turn up where the damage is and may be repaired.

QUESTION: hi Ted Thanks for your answer. It makes alot of sense. We did see some damage starting with the sensor that is inserted in air breather case. The wiring coming off of that had insulation chewed will inspect to see if it went all the way through. speaking of which I am very mechanical and have a good comprehension on repairs, autos, electrical etc. but I would appreciate it if you could tell me this would these wires if indeed there is damage cause these group of sensors malfunction. If not what group would as there appears to be some damage into fuse box. and there was a loose ground, bad fog light connection and some other items. What is the best way for me to determine if the wiring is good or bad using meters and would you please explain the process I should follow to check for shorts, bad connections, etc. to confirm a problem or not.Would I check continuity? Please point me in the right direction.  It would mean so very much as been without a vehicle so very long already. Also my husband had checked ignitors a while back and appeared to be moisture (as in water not gas)in each coil would that have been working on car in downpour or other problem? If there is a bad relay would that interfer with testing wiring system? We had checked efi and cir open relays and a couple of others for unlimted resistance at 1&2 and then limited resistance  at 3&4(5)or visa versa and finally while trying to start car we verified relays clicking.Appear to be okay,ALSO I REALLY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ERROR CODE P1324 refrenciing alfa romero. respectfully yours, Emily

Answer
If there is rodent damge at the intake sensor wire then there is a good chance that there is nore damage somewhere else as well, it's a mess, I know but I don't have an easy answer for you, this type of thing usually requires wiring diagrams and measuring resistances/ continuity for all engine control circuits which is going to be very time consuming, this is why at the dealer we recommend replacing the entire wire harness where damage is found because you can repair one part only to find out that there is another area that needs repair and this process can repeat itself a few times. I have no listing for code P1324,sorry.
