Toyota Repair: outer cv joint, automatic tranny, cv joint

Question
Hi, we have a 1990 camry, dlx, with automatic tranny,
2 wheel drive. A basic question: Can the outer cv joint
be changed without removing axle from transmission?
It's unremovable- stuck in transmission- 2 professional
shops have tried.  So, istead of
replacing entire half-shaft, we'd like to just replace
outer joint in place.   thanks in advance,    jon

Answer
I have never been able to take one apart either, I don't think it's possible the way they are put together at the factory. I understand that it can be extremely difficult to get the axle out of the transmission but I never had one that I couldn't remove using large prybars, it may take a while but they come out eventually, the only thing holding the axle in is a thin compressible snap ring.
