Toyota Repair: 2005 Toyota Corolla LE Fuel Pump, 2005 toyota corolla, engine control modules

Question
The fuel pump on my Toyota went out this morning. My uncle is a starter/alternator mechanic and he diagnosed it after towing it into his shop this morning. I've been hearing a noise underneath my car and toward the back for a few days now. I thought it might have been a loose bracket on my muffler or exhaust pipe, but now I'm thinking it was my fuel pump dying.

So, my uncle said that he could order one from autozone, but the local Toyota place serviceman said it wouldn't fit properly. Both the Toyota guy and my uncle are looking at different places (another parts rep, a junkyard, respectively). The one at autozone was around $700. The one at the Toyota place was around $900. I'm about 45 minutes away from the Toyota place, so my car would have to be towed again.

I'm just not sure what to do? The Toyota serviceman said this was unusual for my make/model of car. I know my car was manufactured in Japan, not the US, if that makes any difference. Oh, and the Toyota serviceman gave me the correct part numbers so I could look online, so that was nice.

What to you think?

Thanks,
Tisha

Answer
The problem may not be the fuel pump, there are some known problems with the engine control modules (ECMs) on these year model corollas causing a no start condition which shuts of spark and injector pulse, so no fuel. What I would suggest is to get it to a Toyota dealer and have them first check for any diagnostic trouble codes, then they should refer to TSB EG042-07, this is a technical service bulletin to check the existing ECM part number and for updated part numbers for your car, the warranty for the computer is 8yrs/80,000 miles but there is actually a recall with no mileage or time limit, this is designated "SAFETY RECALL A0J" so if the computer is the problem and it probably is it will be fixed at no charge to you under the recall.
