Toyota Repair: Toyota Corolla Transmission, torque converter clutch, 2005 toyota corolla

Question
QUESTION: I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla with approximately 185K miles. I have had problems with harsh shifting off and on. In Feb. 2011 the dealer replaced the EMC module due to a recall, but I still have problems with the check engine light coming off and on.  The dealer now says I need a new transmission because the clutch is worn out.  Could the problem with the recall cause my transmission to wear out sooner than it should have?  The dealer says there is nothing they can do since there is no transmission recall.

ANSWER: Can you give me any of the diagnostic trouble codes from the computer?

QUESTION: P0741- Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off

Answer
Toyota did issue a service bulletin TC008-04 that addresses this condition here is the warranty information: R & R of the Speed Sensor, Transaxle, and Torque Converter Clutch Assembly are
covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for
60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
R & R of the Engine Control Module is covered under the Toyota Federal Emissions
Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs
first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
According to the bulletin there are several causes for this problem and throwing a new ECM at it did not solve it in your case. As you can see it is out of warranty but the problem may also be an issue with the speed sensor which you may want to consider replacing first. Ask the dealer to provide a copy of the bulletin to you.
