Toyota Repair: Stalls after start up, vacuum hoses, air hose

Question
Hi there,

I can turn the engine over fine, but she will not stay on unless I keep the gas pedal depressed.  She is running very rich, and when the problem first presented, the only way she stayed on was because the choke engaged.  Once that disengaged, or when I came to a stop, thus stopping the gas, she stalled out.  Now I can't even get her to stay engaged unless I continually depress gas pedal.

She is a 1988 Toyota P/U, manual, 4 cylinder, R22 engine.  She just turned 234,000 miles.  Had her tuned up, and timing readjusted 4,000 miles ago.  Only possible issue at the time was the catalytic converter was rattling.  It would appear as though she is not getting enough oxygen??

Thanks so much!!

Tanya

Answer
These kinds of problems are usually intake system related, check for any cracks or loose clamps in the large intake air hose to the throttle body, check for any other vacuum hoses that may be disconnected from the intaqke system, the catalityc converter may be the problem if it gets clogged up enough.
