Toyota Repair: Toyota Celica 94 -- stalling issues., celica 94, time jess

Question
Hi there,

A couple of weeks ago I bought a '94 Celica, automatic transmission and every so often I get it stalling when it comes to a complete stop. It doesn't do this every time, and idles quite roughly before it stalls so I can usually tell when it is about to happen. I have no problems starting it back up, and the radio &lights etc in the car keep going so I'm assuming it's not the battery. I've been told that it could be idling too low, but the idle seems fine to me? Shortly after buying the car, I had the oil filter changed &the brake pads replaced but they are the only modifications since buying. The car has done around 250, 000ks from memory.

There are a couple of other things that aren't bothering me as much, but I figure while I'm here, why not =]

If I take the car out of overdrive, it runs quite roughly so my poor car is constantly in overdrive, will I come across any problems doing this?

And last thing I noticed was that she appears to usually sit between normal temperature &cold. It starts cold, as I'm assuming most cars will, then will go up to an average temperature &will sometimes drop back down randomly while the car is running. The car smells like it is over heating, like burning oil/rubber, but never seems to go much over the average temperature, only lower. Do you have any ideas what may be causing either of these things?

I plan to take it into a mechanic to have a look, but it would help if I had a fair idea of why the car was doing it because as everyone knows, you sometimes get those mechanics who look at you like there's something wrong with you ;)

Any assistance you can offer would be much appreciated! =]

Thanks heaps for your time.
Jess.

Answer
A mechanic that can look at the car based on your complaints is much better able than me to find the problems, it sounds to me that there may be an engine misfire and some oil leaks, once theechanic has a look at it you're welcome to post a follow up and let me know what they recommend, I may have some helpful suggestions then.
