Toyota Repair: Toyota Yaris water pump query, powertrain warranty, toyota yaris

Question
Hi, my Toyota Yaris T1 (1.1), 2006 with 43 000 kms on clock, recently had it's annual service (always serviced via Toyota).  I was told the water pump needs replacing as leaking coolant.  From my previous cars (all VWs) water pumps were only replaced at about 100 000kms.  I am surprised and querying the reliability of the car, especially as changed to Toyota as thought cars economical and reliable.  What is a water pumps 'usual' life span, should I be concerned it is needing to be replaced now, and are there any other alarm bells? I am a physiotherapist and my analogy is if somebody has a heart attack at 80yrs it is understandable, but if at 20 yrs it would be extremely concerning and unusual!  Thanks for your help

Answer
There have been some cases of leaking water pumps early but it should be covered under the powertrain warranty from Toyota, in the US the warranty is in effect for 5yrs/60,000 miles, have you checkd with the dealer if it is still covered? It depends on the dleivery date or "date of first use" and the current date.  If it's below 5 yrs it should still be covered.
