Toyota Repair: 1995 Toyota Camry - transmission?, toyota camry, move the car

Over the last few days the car has been making a funny (screeching)noise that appeared to be coming from the front drivers side wheel well.  Today, while driving the car, going about 40mph, the car stayed on but while in drive acted like it was in neutral.  When I stopped the car and put the car in reverse it make a loud screeching sound but when its in the drive position the car just acts as if its in neutral.  It has 240,000 miles on the odometer.

Not too sure what this is but if the transmission is making this type of noise and doesn't move the car then it sounds like a major failure of the transmission or differential, the only other thing that I can think of is that there is a problem with the left front drive axle or bearing.
