Toyota Repair: brake problem with 2002 toyota camry, 2002 toyota camry, brake master cylinder

Question
I bought my camry a few months ago. when test driving this car i noted that i had to press the brake peddle quit a bit to get it to respond. i changed both front and back brakes, bled the brakes and nothing helped. can u tell me what the problem is. It seems by what I've read others are having the same problem. i have also adjusted the back brakes, but they don't seem to stay adjusted. this is my wife's car and i am concerned with this problem. please help.

Answer
It could be a weak brake master cylinder that's causing this. Check the pedal free play with the engine off, it it seems too much before making contact with the master cylinder piston adjust the pushrod a little to take up some but not all of the clearance. This is somewhat of a common complaint and is most likely normal, I have replaced a couple of master cylinders that didn't help the situation.
