Toyota Repair: motor mount replacement question, neutral place, emergency brake

Question
People  94 2.2 camry 180k--When in park or neutral very little vibration but when in gear car vibrates, little more in forward than in reverse. I put in a new upper stablilizer.helped some but not much.  does this sound like a motormount? should I put in a new front one? and is it relativly easy?  Thanks Dick

Answer
Sounds like a transmission mount and/or motor mount.  When one fails it strains the other.  Try looking at the mounts with an inspection light and mirror for any obvious failure.
Have an assistant help you with the following:
1)With car in Park / Neutral place emergency brake on and start engine. Watch the engine to see if it "twists" at all.  Accelerate to see if engine moves.  Let off gas quickly.  See if engine moves.
2) Now have assistant place foot on brake pedal and shift into Reverse.  See if engine torques.  Now accelerate and see if engine twists.  Do the same with vehicle in Drive.

There will be some slight twisting while accelerating, any excessive twisting indicates worn motor mounts.  Also the clunking sound will confirm.

As far as relatively easy; that depends on your skill level and your tools (e.g. jack, wrenches, etc) available.

Hope this helps.
