Toyota Repair: 2004 Seqouia Radio Antenna, toyota seqouia, antenna mast

Question
My 2004 Toyota Seqouia's radio antenna will no longer go up...It does so but only a few inches and it sounds horrible...like the motor is giving out in pushing it up..the radio works fine but the reception is not what it could be.  I talked to Toyota and they wanted 183 dollars for a new power retractable antenna and over 200 dollars to put it in...with tax and labor..it came to like 450 dollars.  I mean really...for a radio antenna.  My question is, do I have any other options.  Can anyone put one in.  Can I get a static antenna and put that in. I'm looking for anything better than 450.00
Thanks in advance

Answer
The antenna mast can be replaced and is available from the toyota dealer, it consists of the metal mast with the nylon rod attached, the biggest problem is that most of the time the nylon rod will break and when removing the old one part of it will stay in the motor gears which will require the motor removal from inside the fender well, the motor has to be opened to get the broken piece out, seems to me the dealer doesn't want to bother trying this way which works 90% of the time, the antenna is about $30 from the dealer and I'm sure you can find a mechanic that's willing to install the antenna mast for about $100. By the way, yes you can get a universal manual antenna at most autoparts stores.
