Question
i have a 91 Toyota camry it has a knocking noise in the engine i believe it is a bent or broken piston rod and im not sure about how to fix it but the book doesn't tell me what to look for but i was wondering what would be the best solution to fixing my problem should i replace whats wrong or swap the engine out but there in lye's another problem i cant find an engine for my car    can you help me

Answer
What kind of knocking noise?  Does it sound like marbles, this could be the water pump bearings failing.  Does it only happen under acceleration, does it happen all the time?  Does it get worse the higher the engine speed is?  Are you burning oil?  Can you see it coming out your exhaust pipe?
You can attempt to narrow down the location by using a mechanics stethoscope.  Place the tip on a NON-moving part and listen.  Move the point to a different location and see it the noise changes.
If you need to change the engine try to find a used, low miles one.  Your car was fairly popular and there should still be many of the engines available.  Contact a reputable mechanic; they have better contacts and relationships with used engine vendors and can get you what you need at a fair price (some vendors will give a guarantee!)

Hope this helps.
