Toyota Repair: check engine light P0440, Gas, cap

Question
QUESTION: Hi there, i have a problem with my toyota camry 2002 with 159k miles.  the engine light comes up and when i use a scanner the code that is retrieve is P0440 and P0442.  I I read many articles online pointing to the gas cap.  the gas cap is the original which hasnt been change but i do not see any cracks or anything.

i play around with the cap and reset the light but it will come up again. not sure if it is time to replace the cap.

can you tell me besides the gas cap what could be the problem and how to test ?  thanks

ANSWER: The gas cap has an O-ring that may need to be changed.  The gas cap is not fully sealing, which is sending an error message to the computer.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: Thank you Vince.  do you know where i can buy that O-ring.  I Cannot find it in local store and call the dealer and they say they dont sell. only the whole gas cap

Answer
Depending on the cost of the cap, it might be cheaper to just get the whole assembly.
If not, almost any hardware store will have O-rings that can be used.  Make sure the O-ring material is rated for Oil/Gasoline/Grease (not all rubber is created equal)

Hope this helps.
