Toyota Repair: 22R No Compression, timing, no

Question
81 Toyota pickup 2wd 22R.  I replaced the head gasket, head with a new one, timing chain and gears.  I placed the new chain on the marks as instructed in the manual.  I have 0 compression.  Is it possible that I have the valves opening at the wrong time causing there to be no compression without the valves hitting the pistons? Or why would I have no compression?

Answer
Your valves don't hit because this is a non-inteference engine.
You could have no compression because you are 180 degrees out of synch on your camshaft; you are in the exhaust stroke (i.e exhaust valve open) when you should be in the compression stroke.
You'll need to take your valve cover off to inspect.
Set your crankshaft to the 0 degree mark on the timing mark.  This will be TDC (top dead center) for #1 piston.  With the valve cover off check to see if the dimple on the camshaft is at 12 o'clock. (It should be)  Also check your chain(s) to see if the two bright links are straddling the dimple. (they should  be).  If you cannot find the dimple, look for the keyhole where the dowel from the camshaft connects with the cam gear.  This should be at 12 o'clock.
More than likely you will find your camshaft at some other setting.  This will necessitate loosening the tension on the chain(s), removing the chain(s) from the cam gear, setting the camshaft to TDC, reinstalling the chain(s) and retensioning the chain(s).

Hope this helps
