Toyota Repair: Front end noise, camry xle, rubber insulators

Question
At 85K miles I was hearing what I thought to be my front struts bottoming out on my 2002 Camry XLE with a 3.0 V6. I had the struts replaced at Meineke and the only thing that happened was I got a stiiffer ride but the same noise on rough roads. I went to another mechanic and he suggested the sway bar end links were bad. Replaced those and the sound is still there. I took the car back to Meineke. They pulled and tested the struts and aligned the car all for free. It still makes noise on rough roads. At home I have suspended the car so one wheel is totally off the ground, put a 2x10 under the tire with a fulcrum point back from the tire so I could raise and lower the tire simulating a bummy road. The center shaft rises up and naturally down with pressure on the board and the strut sounds like it is bottoming out and makes a rather severe noise. At this point Meineke does not believe it is the strut because it works like a normal strut outside the car and they can't duplicate the noise that I can hear all the time even though my wife considers me deaf. What else can I do?
Thanks for any and all help you can give

Answer
A very common source for this noise are the upper strut mounts, they should be replaced, they are attached on top of the struts and connect them to the body, they have rubber insulators that wear and cause the struts to be loose, the noise can usually not be duplicated by bouncing the car etc. but it will be there on rough roads.
