Toyota Repair: brakes, wheel bearings, cotter pin

Question
QUESTION: My wife has a 2000 Rav4, all wheel drive.
I'm going to put new brake pads on the front.  From the toyota manual I have, it looks like the wheel bearings are actually in the steering knuckle, not in the disc (or rotor).  The manual says when re-installing the disc just torque to 159 ft-lb.  Is this true, you do not have to tighten and loosen, tighten and loosen while spinning the wheel?

ANSWER: Yes, that's correct these are sealed double roller bearings, just tighten them per repair manual instructions.

QUESTION: Mr. Ritter,

I am having trouble getting the disc off.  I've removed the caliber, taken off the cotter pin/lock cap and center nut(159 ft.lb)as per the Toyota Manual, even beating on it (carefully),and the disc just isn't coming off.  They have been on the car for 10 years, never been off before.
How do I get them off???

Thanks Once Again,

Rick

Answer
It's not necessary to remove the axle nut to get the rotor off, the rotors are not held on by anything, there may be a lot of rust so I would spray the area with some rust penetrant, look for a couple of small holes in the flange, some rotors have these threaded holes to assist in getting them off, insert a 8mm X 1.25 bolt into each hole and tighten them to break the rotor loose.
