Toyota Repair: gas filter replacement, celica toyota, gas filter

I was told by my mechanic not  to replace my 92 celica toyota fuel filter because of the wire that runs thru it could be damaged.they would not take  it off due  to the possibility of damage to it  even though it probably needs replacing since it has not been changed for 7 yrs.

I think what they mean is that the threads on the bottom fitting can be damaged when trying to remove it which will require replacing the lower inlet fuel line. It's common for the threads to strip on the line but you won't know until you remove it, in most cases the threads can be restored and made to be reusable, try another repair place, this place just seems to not want to bother with it.
