Toyota Repair: 1996 TOYOTA TERCEL TRANSMISSION SWAP, 1994 toyota tercel, 1994 toyota paseo

Question
Hi,
About 3 years ago I bought a 1994 Toyota Tercel, drove it 3 months and the engine started knocking so my brother and I purchased a Toyota Paseo Engine OFF ebay that was rebuilt with 40,000 miles on it and we switched it out without any problems.
2 years later my Transmission started acting funny. First it didn't want to go into Reverse, then one day I pulled my Toyota out of my driveway to park it and I noticed that it wouldn't go FORWARD,and BACKWARDS. Even in NEUTRAL you can't even move it. It's like it's locked down and won't move.

MY QUESTION IS THIS: Since we swapped out the engine with a 1994 TOYOTA PASEO. Can we do the same thing with a 1994 TOYOTA PASEO TRANSMISSION or do we need to purchase a TOYOTA TERCEL TRANSMISSION.

KEEP IN MIND THAT IT RUNS GREAT, IT'S JUST THE TRANSMISSION THAT WENT OUT. WOULD YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE TRANSMISSION OR WOULD IT BE CHEAPER TO PURCHASE A NEW ONE.

ALSO WHEN WE DRAINED THE OLD TRANSMISSION FLUID AND SWITCHED OUT THE FILTER AFTER THE TRANSMISSION STARTED ACTING UP THE FIRST TIME, IT LOOKED LIKE METAL SHAVINGS CAME OUT. WOULD YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME AND ANSWERS.
JOHNNY

Answer
It seems the transmission has a major problem and will need to be replaced, possible a differential failure but that's irrelevant since there are metal shavings which will go through all the rest of the transmission. As long as the transmission numbers are the same the paseo trans should work, you can find the transmission numbers on the VIN# sticker on the door opening, it will say something like A-141 or A-143E, as long as they are the same on both cars the transmission is ok to use.
