Toyota Repair: engine problems, scantool, toyota tacoma

My 4cyl Toyota Tacoma suddenly started acting like it's misfiring and the check engine light intermittently blinks on and off. any ideas?

Yes that's a misfire condition, the first thing is to connect a diagnostic scantool to find out what the trouble codes are which will tell us which cylinder is misfiring, most of the larger autoparts stores will do this for you at no charge(autozone, kragen etc) once the trouble codes are known I can help to diagnose further.The blinking check engine light means that the catalityc converter can be damaged if driven for extended periods..
