Toyota Repair: 2001 Toyota Camry 4 cyl. 102k miles, torque converter clutch, friction material

Question
I have a 4 cyl. 2001 Camry LE with 102k miles. Check engine light came on so I had the folks at Advance Auto due a diagnostic check; it says shift solenoid E malfunction. Can you help me?
Thank you.

Answer
This is usually a p0770 trouble code, the solenoid "E" is the shift lock solenoid for the lock-up torque converter, in most cases this code comes up because the solenoid gets clogged with a particle of either metal or clutch material, sometimes this is caused by a failing torque converter clutch and if that's the case the transmission would need to be replaced. What I would recommend doing at this time, if the transmission exhibits no slipping or hard shifting issues,  is to have the transmission fluid exhanged, most repair shops and the dealer have a fluid exchange machine, have the transmission flushed and the codes cleared, if the trouble code comes back then I would remove the transmission oil pan and inspect the fluid on the bottom of the pan for any material like metal particles or friction material and if that's the case it means major transmission problems, I have seldom seen just the solenoid go bad, it's almost always been a problem with contamination of the fluid.
