My Toyota has an engine light on and a grinding noise in the middle of the engine

I don't know if the two are related but the first step would be to have it diagnosed why the check engine light is on, you can try doing this yourself by doing the following: Locate the diagnostic check connector under the hood, it's a small rectangular box, open the cover, inside are the terminal designations of the check connector, locate the terminals TE1+E1, turn the key on and put a jumper wire between tese two terminals, the check engine light will blink giving you a code, it's a two digit code, for example a code 12 would be one blink followed by two, there may be more than one code, let me know what you find.
